Running QuantumATK on a Virtual Machine

Enabling 3D hardware acceleration of graphics can be tricky if running on a virtual machine or on a remote machine through a SSH tunnel. QuantumATK R-2020.09 and later releases therefore come with a fallback graphics driver for enabling software rendering on virtual machines. Simply choose Fallback software rendering when choosing the default 3D graphics rendering mode during QuantumATK installation.

For QuantumATK Q-2019.12 and earlier releases, there is no such fallback option. In this case, the recommendation is to

  • Q-2019.12: Enable 3D hardware acceleration in the virtual machine settings.
  • Q-2019.03 and earlier: Disable 3D hardware acceleration in the virtual machine settings.
